VALENTINE'S DAY

It's too easy to gripe and complain about what we as consumers have done to the concept of Valentine's Day (read: the giant plush animals holding hearts in their mouth's and the love shaped confectionary). They keep making these things year after year because someone is buying them, right?

I think Valentine's Day is a nice reminder to go out of your way and do something for whomever you care about: girlfriend, boyfriend, parent, sibling, best friend- whatever. We've all taken someone for granted at a point in our existence and we are therefor all responsible for ensuring that it does not become a habit. I think Valentine's Day should be looked at as a simple reminder of that. Yes you should be doing nice things for others throughout the year, but are you? With comfort comes laziness and that laziness can be responsible for the destructions of something great if you are not careful.

So ditch all things heart shaped dust collectors this year and try a more heartfelt approach. Perhaps even try spending a night without a cell phone glued to your hand while in the company of those you care about... then again that might be a little too crazy for you this year.

Berlin, Germany

Germany has been by far my favourite country. Though the food was heavy, it was comforting. There was lots of Weissbier (Weißbier in German) to be enjoyed, which just so happens to be my favourite.

Berlin in particular may have been one of my most admired stops on our trip. I could easily go back to that city and spend another week or two wandering around. We have a lot of photos from Berlin on account that its a pretty inspiring city and also because we got an awesome little tour of the city from a local. A local by choice at that. He'd been living there for the past 8 years, but was originally from Glasgow, Scotland. He majored in Germany History and had a passion for street art which gave the tour a very interesting perspective.

Although we didn't see all the monuments and important political buildings that most people visiting the city would have, we spent our day learning about the history of the divided city and where it's cultural vibrance came from. We wandered around downtown Mitte and ended up in Kreuzberg. I learned and retained more information in that one day then from the entirety of my grade 10 history class.

We did manage to find some time to enjoy the tastier things in Berlin. Justin insisted on checking out a joint called konnopke-imbiss that he had heard about. Of course, this was for currywurst. It was delicious and eaten in almostcomplete purely gluttonous silence while we watched a storm roll in. A day of travelling builds up a hell of an appetite.

As recommended by a friend we thankfully checked out Bonanza Coffee House. The coffee was simply put, incredible (thank you Sarah)! We even bought extra to bring back to Switzerland for Rob.

I like the beginning of this article but towards the end I was loosing my focus. A little bit much. Still the whole artcile is worth at least a quick once over as it may hit home with a few of you. It's very much a look at us, right now.

So what’s the affect of today’s youth culture? Not just the hipsters, but the Millennial Generation as a whole, people born between the late ’70s and the mid-’90s, more or less — of whom the hipsters are a lot more representative than most of them care to admit. Justin and I are lucky enough to be staying with my wonderful cousin Hannah and her husband Rob whilst exploring Europe. I can't properly illustrate how grateful I am to have a home to return to in between our little expeditions, especially one as loving and warm as this. Rob has been truly wonderful putting up with us and showing us around the city - he has certainly made the transition to this foreign country a breeze.

Staying in Lausanne thus far has been interesting to say the least. I have never in my entire life been so grateful for sticking with the french immersion programme as long as I did. Thank-you mom.

We still have a lot of wandering around that needs to be done, for now here are a few photos from a park that we happened upon last week while the weather was still + 25.

I am absolutely in love with these frames especially after realizing that every other girl in Germany seemed to be sporting the classic gold wire aviators that I had also chosen to bring with. Justin saw these advertised in a men's magazine and though it was insinuated that these frames were for the boys, I can't say that I care.

Oktoberfest, Munich | Part 2

Our arrival in Munich was a bit of fate and luck mixed together. It started with some extreme last minute planning, that secured us a hostel room that was literally three blocks (stumbling distance) from the fair grounds. Upon arrival in Munich we were having some technology issues that were preventing us from contacting Mallory's cousin, Jonah, whom we were planning on meeting up with. While I went downstairs in our hostel to get on some internets, who would I run into but Jonah himself, and he was staying only three doors down from us.

Later that evening, after dining on a fine meal of wiener schnitzel and wiessebier, we met back up with Jonah and headed to the Oktoberfest fair grounds. Some how we managed to hustle our way into a packed house at the Paulaner beer tent and weaseled our way into a table. Full credit goes to the four pretty ladies in our crew on that front. In the beer tents you have to be at a table to get beer from the unforgiving, dirndl clad servers. Several liters of beer were consumed, countless "prosts" were shared, many songs were sung, and immeasurable revelry was had. We were surrounded by thousands of others doing the exact same, standing on tables, singing their hearts out. The atmosphere was simply amazing, like nothing I've ever experienced before. Definitely the most epic party I've had the opportunity to attend.

The rest of the night became an anticipated blurred. After leaving the wrong exit of the park, we got lost on our three block journey back to the hostel. A rickshaw ride was had as were terrible attempts at pronouncing German street names.

The next day, to say the least, was rough. We had to check out of our hostel at 10am. Way to early considering the evening prior. Grease and coffee was consumed, naps were had in a park and we were restored and ready for some more exploration of Munich.

We toured through Marienplatz and saw Asamkirche, and the very impressive Glockenspiel at the Neues Rathaus. We went to the royal residence, the hofgarten, and the englischer garten. The englischer garten, or English Garden, is a huge park in the city with a man-made river running through it. At one point in the river there is a standing wave, called eisbach, that many locals surf on. It looked like a lot of fun and I really wish I had a wet suit and board with me.

Later that evening, we filled our bellies with some more German fare at the Paulaner beer hall. I did some pretty serious work on a roasted pork knuckle, potato dumplings, gravy and red cabbage. I washed it down with a fresh kellerbier, an unfiltered, un-aged, lager. So filling and delicious. We headed down to Marienplatz and I proceeded to get us lost while trying to locate the infamous Hofbrauhaus. Thankfully, Mallory took over navigation and got us there and we took in the enormous beer hall along with a couple steins of Helles and Weissbier. After Hofbrauhaus, we headed down to the Oktoberfest to catch the very ending of the festivities and inhale some bratwurst. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to eat a sausage after consuming a large portion of a pigs leg. I suppose I summoned some inspiration for Anthony Bourdain and enjoyed every bite of that delicious white sausage lathered in mustard.

With a full belly and a mild buzz, we made the journey back to the hotel for some much needed rest before a big day of train rides.

Oktoberfest, Munich | We came, we saw, we drank.

Well, this is officially my first post on DOT DOT DOT. I suppose it is only fitting that it should be about our adventure to Munich, Germany for Oktoberfest. For those who don't know, I'm pretty much obsessed with beer, so Oktoberfest in Munich was a dream come true.

I only had a vague idea of what to expect from this trip: beer, bratwurst, not a lot of English and lederhosen. That was all very accurate, but I had also been told that as a beer lover I would be disappointed by the selection of beer, though the limited selection would be very, very tasty. I definitely agree with the very, very tasty part but I must make it clear that I was by no means disappointed by the beer options offered. Munich boosts a handful of extremely well established breweries, and though you may not have the vast selection of beer you might find in the American and Canadian craft brewing scene, there are about five different styles brewed on a regular basis that the Bavarians have sworn by for hundreds of years, along with several more seasonal brews.

The city of Munich itself was absolutely unreal. It set a pretty high precedent for the other European cities we are yet to visit. It is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to. The historic buildings were spectacularly grandiose and extremely well taken care of. The city was incredibly clean with the exception of the late hours after the closing of the Oktoberfest fair grounds, but by the next morning, the mess was gone.

Oktoberfest has to be the most impressive festival in the world. Not only is this a beer drinking festival but there is a ton of food as well as impressive rides. Not the sketchy, carney-operated, death machines one would find at the CNE, but full on roller coasters similar to ones at Canada's Wonderland. Though the rides were impressive, the beer tents were mind boggling. Barely resembling a tent at all, these massive structures house huge kitchens and thousands of people at a time, and are constructed for the two week festival, only to be taken down again at the end. Words alone cannot explain how amazing this event is, one needs to experience the atmosphere and revelry to truly appreciate it.

NIXON: MINIMAL (THE TIME TELLER)

Our flight leaves at 6:00 pm tonight, tomorrow morning we'll be literally waking up in another country.

Planning and (not) packing.

So we are looking at ten days until take off, maybe even nine at this point depending on how specific you want to be. A lot of our planning seems to be on the back of various wedding menues and scribbled into one of three possible notebooks.

I have to say thanks to all of the wonderful people we've met over the past few months who have eagerly shared their traveling experiences with us (and of course recommendations.) This is probably why so much of the planning (ie. places we would like to visit) is scatter amongst various purses and note books...

Gee - thanks to Mandy for introducing this to me. I don't know if I have ever seen so many beautiful pieces in one place, I will be doing some online window shopping now as a result. I don't dare make packing for Switzerland any more difficult then it already will be.
